OK WHATEVER! I love how you too just jump on our backs like that when all we want is to comfort our babies! It's shear instinct to want to make sure they are as content as can be and it breaks our hearts to see them cry. I will speak for myself when I say that it makes me feel like I am a bad mom. Now, I know Emmaline hardly makes a peep, but still! It's part of the whole "mom" thing. If you worked half as hard as we did to bring those little girls into this world, maybe you would understand.

And Andy, the only reason you wake up refreshed in the morning is because you sleep next to that loud fan and couldn't hear an elephant running in the house!

lol that is almost the same checklist I go through as well !

1) Check comfort level (ie cold? burps? etc)

2) Hungry

3) Smelly

4) Tired

If none of the above come to realization that sometimes babies are just fussy and when she feels like not being fussy she will shut up. Why wear myself out (especially after midnight) every time she makes a noise?

:) My wife doesn't quite see eye to eye, but then again I get up refreshed in the morning and she is still droopy eyed. And the baby is just fine

Hey look we have a male audience! Thanks for commenting and only you commenting as to fortify my perspective and justify my behavior (minus kt's non-partisan exclamation). I really appreciate that. Now this post is closed for comment.

Okay, really, here's how I see it. She cries once, I give her a pat. She cries twice, I put the pacifier in her mouth. She cries thrice, I smell her bum and see if she's hungry. Not that smelling her bum would tell me if she's hungry...you get the idea. But after that, I say to myself, "Self, in 15 years is her crying right now really going to make any difference?" Then it dawns on me that I'm screwed either way and I reach for the earplugs. And if it's past 11pm, I skip steps 1, 2, 3.

My wife and mine reactions are similar to your experiences. Our little girl sleeps next to the bed and every time she rustles the blankets or wimpers in her sleep my wife jumps out of bed and "makes sure" she is ok -- countless times through the night when in fact the baby is just fine.

My wife refuses to let the baby fuss -- she will tirelessly put the binky back into her mouth every 10 seconds for hours and hours on end . . . if it was up to me I do it a couple times and figure that if the kid really wanted to suck on something then she wouldn't be spitting it out.

We have been lucky with the screaming, for the most part our girl is pretty mild tempered, but I was prepared to use ear plugs if necessary, my wife probably wouldn't find it too amusing though :)
